Iran Welcomes Nomination of Iraq’s Prime Minister-Designate, Reaffirms Support for Stability
In a post on X on Friday, Araghchi said the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomed the decision made by Iraq’s Coordination Framework, the country’s largest parliamentary bloc, to nominate Zaidi for the premiership. He also offered congratulations to Zaidi and wished him success in forming a government that serves the Iraqi people.
The Iranian foreign minister reiterated Tehran’s commitment to respecting Iraq’s sovereignty and supporting its political stability, development, and expanded bilateral cooperation in a way that benefits both nations.
Zaidi’s nomination, announced on Thursday, helped end a months-long political deadlock in Iraq. The Coordination Framework had previously seen figures such as Nouri al-Maliki as leading contenders following the November elections. However, both Maliki and outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani later withdrew from the race.
The coalition praised their decision as “historic and responsible,” saying it played a key role in resolving the political impasse. Al-Sudani also issued a separate message congratulating Zaidi on his nomination.
