UN Chief Applauds Iran- U.S Ceasefire After 40 Days of Conflict
In a statement provided to IRNA, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the secretary general, said, “The secretary general welcomes the announcement of a two-week ceasefire by the United States and Iran.”
“He calls on all the parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to comply with their obligations under international law and to abide by the terms of the ceasefire in order to pave the way toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region,” the statement read.
The spokesperson added that the secretary general underscores that an end to hostilities is urgently needed to protect civilian lives and alleviate human suffering.
Dujarric further noted that the UN chief “expresses sincere appreciation for the efforts of Pakistan and other countries involved in facilitating the ceasefire,” adding that Jean Arnault, the secretary general’s personal envoy, is in the region to support efforts toward lasting peace.
Following 40 days of joint US-Israeli war against Iran, the two sides finally agreed early Wednesday Tehran time to a two-week ceasefire mediated by Pakistan.
US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s decision to step back from the war late Tuesday local time in a statement posted on the Truth Social platform.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has announced in a statement that almost all of the country’s war objectives have been achieved, while announcing that negotiations with the United States are expected to take place in Islamabad to finalize the political outcome of the conflict.
