Iran Calls on UN to Act After Trump Acknowledges Supplying Weapons to Terrorists
The United States has been trying to turn peaceful protests in Iran into violence, unrest, and bloodshed, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, said in a letter to the UN secretary-general and the Security Council.
He was reacting to Trump's admission that Washington had sent weapons to Iran. "We sent guns, a lot of guns. They were supposed to go to the people so they could fight back against these thugs," Trump told reporters at a White House Easter event.
"You know what happened? The people that they sent them to kept them," Trump added, according to Press TV.
The US president did not name who he accused of taking the weapons. But a Fox News reporter quoted Trump on Sunday as blaming "Kurdish intermediaries" for diverting the arms.
'Flagrant violation of the UN Charter'
In the letter, Iravani said Trump's remarks confirmed Iran's longstanding position that Washington has been fueling instability.
"Such behavior is in line with the United States' long-standing policy of creating, financing, and arming terrorist groups in the Middle East and beyond," the letter said.
"It constitutes a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the fundamental principles and rules of international law."
