Gharibabadi warns against foreign military presence in strait of Hormuz
In a post on X, Gharibabadi responded to a recent joint statement by France and the United Kingdom, saying the Strait of Hormuz must not become a venue for military displays by extra-regional powers.
He described Iran as a responsible guarantor of the waterway's security and warned against any military moves that could heighten tensions.
He emphasized that the security of the Strait should be ensured by the littoral states, adding that any party seeking to fuel instability would bear responsibility for the consequences of its actions.
His remarks came after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron issued a joint statement describing the Strait of Hormuz as a critical route for the global economy.
The two leaders called for safeguarding international shipping through the waterway and announced their readiness to support a broader multinational mission aimed at protecting freedom of navigation.
The statement also said Oman had agreed to cooperate with London and Paris to enhance maritime security in its territorial waters.
