The latest edition of the U.S. News Best Global Universities 2026 rankings has once again highlighted the position of Iranian universities within the global academic landscape.

According to the rankings, nearly 80 Iranian universities were listed among the world's leading higher education institutions, underscoring the country's broad scientific presence on the international stage.

Among them, Islamic Azad University recorded one of its most notable achievements in recent years, securing 460th place worldwide and ranking second nationally after the University of Tehran.

The university outperformed several of Iran's most prominent higher education institutions, demonstrating a substantial increase in its global academic standing.

The U.S. News ranking system primarily evaluates research performance, relying on indicators such as the quality and quantity of scientific publications, citation impact, international research collaboration, and overall research influence. These metrics provide a direct assessment of universities' scientific output and scholarly impact.

Analysts believe that Islamic Azad University's improved ranking reflects a gradual transformation in Iran's scientific landscape, moving beyond a concentration of research activity in a limited number of institutions toward a broader distribution of scientific production.

According to the published results, the university also ranked 117th in Asia, positioning it alongside leading Iranian institutions such as Sharif University of Technology, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and the University of Tabriz.

Higher education experts attribute the university's recent progress to the expansion of postgraduate programs, an increase in faculty members, and the development of research infrastructure across its various campuses, particularly in major provincial centers.

Islamic Azad University of Kurdistan Province, as part of the university's nationwide network, has also contributed to strengthening research activities and advancing toward a new-generation university model through increased scientific output and participation in regional research projects.

However, experts emphasize that improvements in international rankings alone do not fully reflect the quality of a country's scientific system. They argue that academic progress must also be accompanied by greater research impact on industry, solutions to societal challenges, and technological innovation.

The university's achievement of the 460th global ranking and second place nationally underscores its evolving role in Iran's scientific ecosystem, transforming it from a primarily educational institution into an active contributor to knowledge production and research development.
