(Tehran Ana)- A study by Columbia University researchers suggests that stable employment in midlife is associated with better memory and cognitive function in later life.

According to Alzheimer’s & Dementia, researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing data from more than 2,400 Americans over a 16-year period.

The researchers examined participants’ employment histories and assessed their cognitive function. They found that men who experienced greater employment instability performed worse on cognitive tests, with results indicating more pronounced brain aging equivalent to about seven additional years beyond the expected level.

Among women, those who retired early or experienced extended periods outside the workforce performed worse on tests of memory and executive function, including planning and decision-making. The researchers estimated that these patterns were associated with approximately six additional years of brain aging.

By the end of the follow-up period, about 30% of women and 31% of men had developed symptoms of mild cognitive impairment or dementia.

The researchers believe that continued engagement in work, rather than simply feeling secure in one’s job, may be an important factor in maintaining cognitive health.

According to the researchers, regular employment during midlife may help maintain mental alertness and, in turn, be associated with slower age-related cognitive decline.

The scientists emphasized that the study demonstrates an association but does not establish that employment directly affects brain health. Other factors related to employment history and lifestyle may also influence cognitive health.
