Iran denounces US threats against Oman as violation of international law
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned remarks by senior US officials targeting the Sultanate of Oman, accusing Washington of using intimidation and coercive measures against sovereign states.
In a statement released on Friday, Baghaei criticized threats by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to impose sanctions on Oman, following earlier remarks by former US President Donald Trump in which he allegedly threatened military action against the Gulf country.
Baghaei described the rhetoric as an example of political bullying and said such conduct reflects what he called the moral and political decline of the US governing system.
The Iranian spokesperson stressed that threatening sanctions against Oman on what he described as baseless grounds is completely illegal and inconsistent with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
He also called on the international community to react responsibly to such actions and prevent the normalization of behavior that undermines established international legal standards.
The remarks came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington could impose “aggressive” sanctions on Oman if Muscat cooperates with Iran on establishing a tolling mechanism in the Strait of Hormuz.
The warning followed comments reportedly made by Donald Trump less than a day earlier, in which he threatened strong action against Oman if it pursued a joint agreement with Iran regarding management of the strategic waterway.
