Researchers at Amirkabir University of Technology, in collaboration with the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry, have significantly enhanced the capacity, conductivity and stability of lithium-ion batteries by adopting an innovative engineering approach to battery structure.

The scientific achievement could pave the way for the commercialization of low-cost, high-performance domestically produced batteries for strategic industries, particularly the electric vehicle sector.

Saba Zomorodi, a PhD researcher responsible for implementing the project, said that iron silicate (LFS)-based materials offer low cost and good stability, but their limited electrical conductivity has hindered their optimal performance.

“By doping the battery with tin and nitrogen-doped graphene, we successfully modified the cathode structure, improving electrical conductivity and accelerating lithium-ion transport,” she explained.

The technology, whose findings were published in the international Springer journal, could help reduce production costs while enabling the development of domestically manufactured batteries with high thermal safety and lower environmental impact.

The researchers expect the technology to have broad applications in electric and hybrid vehicles, renewable-energy storage systems and electronic devices, potentially strengthening Iran’s capacity for self-sufficiency in the production of advanced batteries.
